How this works

Every iPhone on this order is already registered to Boston Children's Hospital in Apple Business Manager (ABM). The first time a phone is powered on and connected to Wi-Fi, it automatically downloads BCH's management profile and then installs BCH's apps and settings on its own. Most setup screens are skipped automatically.

Your job: label each phone, walk it through the few remaining setup screens, open a handful of apps and accept their prompts, set a few settings, check it, and pack it.

  1. PrepareSupplies, Wi-Fi, charge
  2. LabelSerial number on the phone's back
  3. SetupPower on, enroll in BCH management
  4. Hub appOpen, accept prompts
  5. Apps installedWait until every app finishes
  6. SettingsLocker, 5G, App Store
  7. Rover & HaikuOpen once, accept prompts
  8. Quality checkVerify and log each phone
  9. Case & packCase on, box, ship

Menu names can differ slightly between iOS versions.

The rules that matter most

Breaking one of these usually means the phone has to be erased and set up again.

  1. Never skip Remote Management. If the Remote Management screen does not appear during setup, stop working on that phone and follow Troubleshooting.
  2. Never sign in with an Apple Account (Apple ID) — not in setup, the App Store, or Settings.
  3. Never sign in to any app with a username or password. Just open the apps listed here and accept their prompts.
  4. Keep phones on Wi-Fi and on power until every app has finished installing.
  5. Do not install, delete or move apps, and do not change settings that aren't in this guide. BCH's management handles everything else.
  6. When something doesn't match this guide, set the phone aside and ask BCH — don't improvise.

0Before you start

Supplies

  • The iPhones, cases and charging cables on this order
  • Label printer and labels for the serial number
  • Isopropyl alcohol wipes (to clean the phone back before labeling)
  • Shipping boxes and padding
  • The device manifest spreadsheet (see Manifest)

Wi-Fi

  • Any Wi-Fi network with internet access works. Once enrolled, BCH's management takes over the phone's Wi-Fi settings.
  • Avoid networks with a sign-in / splash page (guest Wi-Fi at hotels, etc.) — enrollment can fail behind one.

Get ready

  1. Charge phones to at least 50% before starting, and keep them on power during setup.
  2. Open the manifest and fill in one row per phone as you go.

1Label the phone

The serial number label goes on the back of the iPhone itself — not on the case.

  1. Print a label with the iPhone's serial number. The serial number is printed on the iPhone's retail box — keep the box until the label is on.
  2. Wipe the back of the phone with an alcohol wipe and let it dry.
  3. Apply the label to the back of the phone.
    • Do not cover the cameras, flash, or microphone.
    • Keep it flat and straight, with no bubbles or lifted corners. Press firmly for a few seconds.
  4. After setup, the serial in Settings›General›About must match the label — this is checked in Quality check.

2Power on & setup

Press and hold the side button until the Apple logo appears. BCH's configuration skips most setup screens automatically, so you should only see the ones below.

ScreenWhat to do
HelloSwipe up from the bottom of the screen.
LanguageSelect English.
Country or RegionSelect United States.
Choose a Wi-Fi NetworkSelect any Wi-Fi network with internet access and enter its password.
Remote ManagementRequired. The screen says the iPhone will be configured by Boston Children's Hospital. Tap Enroll This iPhone (may say Continue) and wait for it to finish.
If this screen never appears, stop — see Troubleshooting.
Location ServicesTap Enable Location Services.
Any other screenAccept the default and tap Continue — unless it asks you to sign in or create a passcode. For those, choose Set Up Later / Not Now, and let BCH know which screen appeared.

The Home Screen appears and BCH's apps start installing on their own (gray icons that say Waiting… or Loading…).

3Hub app (Omnissa Intelligent Hub)

Wait until the Hub icon finishes installing (no gray icon or progress ring), then:

  1. Tap Hub to open it.
  2. Data & Privacy: tap Accept.
  3. Location: iOS first offers only Allow Once / Allow While Using App / Don't Allow. Tap Allow While Using App. When a second prompt offers Change to Always Allow, tap it.
  4. For every other pop-up (Notifications, Bluetooth, etc.) tap Allow / Yes / Always Allow.
  5. Go through the remaining in-app screens and tap I Understand on each.
  6. Double-check location: Settings›Apps›Hub›Location must be Always, and Precise Location must be on. Fix it here if the in-app prompt was missed. Hub location = Always, Precise Location on.

4Confirm all apps are installed

Keep the phone on Wi-Fi and power. Apps install on their own — you do not need the App Store.

  1. Wait until no icon on the Home Screen is gray, shows a progress ring, or says Waiting… / Loading…. Every app icon is in full color and opens.

5Device settings

Shortcut: the CMDI GCT app

If the CMDI GCT app is on the phone, open it — it walks you through these settings screen by screen. Then use the list below to confirm nothing was missed.

5.1  Locker

  1. Open Locker and tap Allow / Accept on every prompt. Do not sign in.
  2. Go to Settings›General›AutoFill & Passwords and turn Locker on. Locker is toggled on.
  3. Go to Settings›Apps›Locker›Live Activities and turn Live Activities on. Live Activities toggle is green.

5.2  Cellular — 5G data mode

  1. Go to Settings›Cellular›Cellular Data Options›Data Mode.
  2. Select Allow More Data on 5G. Checkmark next to "Allow More Data on 5G". If this option isn't shown, note it in the manifest and continue.

5.3  App Store — automatic downloads

  1. Go to Settings›Apps›App Store.
  2. Under Automatic Downloads: turn App Downloads on and App Updates on.
  3. Under Cellular Data: turn Automatic Downloads on, then tap App Downloads and choose Always Allow. Automatic Downloads on; Cellular → App Downloads = Always Allow.

6Rover & Haiku — first launch

Each app only needs to be opened once so its prompts are answered. Do not sign in.

Rover

  1. Open Rover.
  2. Tap Accept / Allow on every prompt.
  3. Stop at the sign-in screen. Swipe up to close the app.

Haiku

  1. Open Haiku.
  2. Tap Accept / Allow on every prompt.
  3. Stop at the sign-in screen. Swipe up to close the app.

7Quality check — every phone

Do this for each phone before it goes in a case, and record the result in the manifest. A phone that fails any check does not ship — set it aside and report it.

8Case, pack & ship

Case

  1. Put the phone in its case. Make sure the label is flat and not wrinkled under the case.
  2. Power the phone off (hold the side button and either volume button, then slide to power off). Phones ship powered off.

Pack

  1. Take the USB-C charging cable out of each retail box and keep it. Then discard the retail packaging (boxes, inserts, paperwork) — phones do not ship in their Apple boxes.
  2. Pack phones into as few boxes as possible, padded so they can't shift or rub screen-to-screen.
  3. Pack all charging cables in a separate box. Label it CHARGING CABLES — QTY ___.
  4. Number every box (Box 1 of N) and write the phone count on the outside.
  5. Put a packing list inside each box listing the serial numbers in that box. Enter the box number for each phone in the manifest.
  6. Email the completed manifest to your BCH contact before the shipment leaves, then send the tracking number(s).

ADevice manifest

One row per phone, as an Excel or CSV file. BCH uses this to confirm every phone was set up and to find it by box.

BTroubleshooting & when to stop

Stop and set the phone aside when…
  • The Remote Management screen never appeared, or someone signed in with an Apple Account.
  • The phone is damaged or won't power on.
  • The same problem repeats after following the fix below once.

Record the serial number and the problem in the manifest Notes column and report it to your BCH contact. Do not ship it — continue with the other phones while you wait for an answer.

ProblemWhat to do
No Remote Management screen — setup went straight to the Home ScreenThe phone did not reach BCH's management. Erase it: Settings›General›Transfer or Reset iPhone›Erase All Content and Settings, then set it up again on a different Wi-Fi network. If it happens again, stop and report the serial.
"Unable to connect to the configuration server" or enrollment errorCheck the Wi-Fi has internet and no sign-in page. Tap Try Again. If it fails twice, power off and report.
Apps stuck on Waiting… / Loading…Confirm Wi-Fi is connected. Restart the phone and wait 15 more minutes. Still stuck: report the serial and app names. Don't install apps from the App Store.
Hub location isn't "Always"Settings›Apps›Hub›Location → Always; turn on Precise Location.
Accidentally tapped "Don't Allow" in an appOpen Settings›Apps›(app name) and turn the permission back on.
